The Department and role purpose

Access and Engagement (A&E) is part of the broader Student Recruitment and Admissions Department (see below). Access and Engagement works to inspire, educate, motivate and support the choices of young people traditionally under-represented at university, and Durham University in particular. We are ambitious, passionate about our work and committed to making a positive difference. Widening Participation is a key target in the University’s Education Strategy.

Further information on Access and Engagement can be found at https://www.dur.ac.uk/academic.office/access-engagement/.

This role is based within A&E and will provide direct administrative support to a range of projects and activities ran by the team. In the first instance, the post holder will be based in the Access Team and will support both administrative and front-line customer service support to projects such as Supported Progression, Sutton Trust, STEP. They will therefore directly contribute to the University’s strategic Access and Participation commitments. However, it is also expected that the post holder will work flexibly and agilely to support colleagues in the Engagement team and the wider Recruitment and Admissions Department. The post holder will therefore also benefit from functional support and supervision by the Department Assistant Manager.

Access includes projects to support admissions pathways to the University for under-represented and/or disadvantaged young people. This includes Durham’s UK Summer School (Sutton Trust), STEP (Space to Explore Potential), the Supported Progression programme, and DU Cares and other similar activities from time to time.

This area involves working with schools and colleges to support recruitment of students from under-represented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds. A primary focus of the Engagement team is the North East Schools Membership Scheme.

Based in the Global Division, Student Recruitment and Admissions brings together a number of teams providing services in events, enquiry management, CRM, data analysis and forecasting, projects and compliance and admissions. It provides an essential service to the University in ensuring its financial sustainability and in delivering student number growth and increasing diversity in line with strategic aims and targets. It is the public face of the University in UK schools and colleges, through contact with prospects, enquirers and applicants across the world and through our events programme. The team includes a range of professionals from a number of specialisms including administrators, decision makers, data analysts and forecasters, IT specialists, designers and marketers, events managers and recruiters. It supports academic departments in the development of their contributions to recruitment and provides domestic market insight and customer relationship management. The team is responsible for adherence to requisite regulations and UCAS contract requirements.

The team works in collaboration with colleagues in the Marketing Team (Marketing and Communications) to develop pre-contact and conversion marketing campaigns and with the International Office for international student recruitment

The Administrator will have responsibility for administrative support to the Head of Department and the wider team. The main aspects of the role are to provide and oversee a professional and effective front of house service  which reflects positively the work of the service and facilitates ease of access for all service users and to contribute to all administrative support functions across a complex, busy and multi-faceted support service. The Administrator will contribute to the processing of financial information to and from the Head of Department and Access and Engagement staff and contribute to the development of systems and process to further benefit service developments.

There is an expectation the post holder will contribute cover for service events such as Open Days. This may include some evening and weekend working. A DBS check will also be required.
